Broncho Billy Park is the neighborhood park on Magnolia. It is a hub of family activity, nestled next to the old Courtenay Elementary Language Arts Center (soon to be a daycare center). The tree-lined playlot is an excellent place for families.

There’s a soft surface playground, water spray feature, and swing set. The playground area is designated as a safe space for kids 12 and younger.

What is the issue with the park?

Unfortunately, the park has seen continued crime in the area around the park, including shootings and drug trafficking. The unlit park provides the perfect cover for this unwanted activity at night. The criminal activity makes residents feel unsafe and concerned for their physical safety.

How can Alderman Cappleman help?

Each Aldermanic District receives over $1.5 million in Menu Funds to support specific infrastructure and capital improvement projects in the ward.

We want to ask the alderman to use the funds for two specific initiatives in Broncho Billy Playlot Park to make it safer for children, families, and nearby residents:

  1. Monitored cameras in the park- There are only two cameras in Sheridan Park (Sunnyside Mall & Wilson & Magnolia). Studies show city-owned cameras combined with police follow-up led to a 30% reduction in drug-related offenses and a 20% reduction in violent crimes.
  2. Increased lighting in and around the park- While the park officially closes at 9 PM (when the lights turn off), people often stay late into the night and early morning. Increased lighting would help police identify those breaking park hours and make the neighborhood safer for residents.

What can you do?

Please sign this petition and ask Alderman Cappleman to use the Menu Funds to make Broncho Billy Park a safe place for the whole community to enjoy.
