Leicestershire County Council have submitted plans to concrete over one of the few remaining free spaces around Lutterworth - The Rye Hills.

They plan to build 2,750 new homes (some of which will back directly on to the M1 motorway) with inadequate plan for further infrastructure, for example the proposed GP surgery has no secured funding. Most alarmingly of all, the council have decided to not include plans for a bypass to help divert some of the increased traffic from the development away from the already congested and polluted town centre.

Leicestershire County Council have included a plan for a ‘spine road’ a minor road through the development and have stated (naively) that traffic such as lorries etc will use this new road and be encouraged to do so by additional signage. It seems unlikely that lorry drivers from Magna Park (who will still be able to drive through the town!) will use a longer route to get to Magna Park, given the time pressures they are under.

Lutterworth is already one of the most polluted towns in the UK owing to it's ‘fortunate’ links to the motorways. According to the Royal College of Physicians, air pollution contributes to 40,000 early deaths each year, in the UK. The report also recommends that local authorities act in protecting public health where air pollution levels are high. This plan does nothing to address this issue, only add to those pollution levels.

The loss of this space will mean there will be nowhere for us or our children to roam, loss of habitats (including hedgerows and mature trees) and wildlife. An area of Special Scientific Interest including many threatened species will be built around and isolated from the surrounding ecosystem. Access to open space and nature is important for mental health, but instead of protecting this important resource we will face a further congested and polluted town centre, increased pressure on infrastructure including doctor’s surgery and schools etc and reduced access to green spaces.

Leicestershire County Council, as well as the district council, have declared a climate emergency. Going ahead with plans that will lead to biodiversity loss and increased emissions is totally at odds with this declaration and the target they have set to reach net zero emissions by 2030.

If you care about our town please sign. There is still a glimmer of hope as we have a Neighbourhood Plan put in place by Lutterworth Town Council. If we have enough support and signatures the council may reconsider their awful plans. This plan is a money grabbing scheme by Leicestershire County Council who own the land. Nothing more. Don’t let them get away with damaging our town forever.
