The Alberta Provincial Government is sending students K-12 back to in-person classes starting January 8, 2021. This decision has caused six entire grades of students (specifically high school students) into a state of panic. Students were just getting used to attending school online, and having to make the adjustment from online to in-person classes so abruptly in the most stressful period of the semester is unfair, and frankly in the worst interest of students. This is the exact opposite of what the Alberta government claims to be doing, which is supporting the mental health of young learners. Having any sense of stability ripped from the grasp of these children is catastrophic. Furthermore, these kids have had barely any adequate instruction during this semester due to staff and students isolating and online instruction. Throwing them back into schools right before some of the most heavily weighted and hardest tests of the semester is a recipe for unnecessary stress and discouragement from school as a whole.

Of course, put kids K-6 back in school, their parents are going through enough. But the older kids can take care of themselves. Please, keep 7-12 schools online until the end of the semester. Life sucks enough as it is.

As a grade 12 student myself, I speak for my peers and all of those who feel this decision is uncalled for. Besides the fact that there will be an increased spread of Covid-19 when we return, keeping schools closed is in the best interest of Alberta students when it comes to finishing this semester as strong as possible. Really, making diploma exams optional was the bare minimum - please take our experience and age related circumstances into account when making this decision.
