Geoffrey Rezewski started this petition to Alberta Government and

In 2019 I was diagnosed with a Leaking Heart Valve which required me to undergo Open heart surgery.  After completion of the surgery I was informed that for the rest of my life I would need to take Warfin (a form of blood thinner), to ensure that the natural clotting effect of blood would not block the Mechanical heart valve which could cause a heart attack or stroke.

The blood thinner dosage must be monitored especially for the first few weeks post surgery and beyond as a person becomes more active as the the body naturally metabolizes the drug at different rates in different people.

The current system relies on the Patient to go to a medical lab and have them draw samples of blood which is then forwarded to the Anticoagulation team who adjust drug dosage by results.  These tests during the first couple weeks must occur 2-3 times weekly and gradually to weekly, then every 10 days to finally bi-weekly for life.

The costs both in test cost, tying up Medical labs and professionals, and the patient taking the time or time off work to complete this action adds up pretty quick, un necessarily straining our healthcare system, the taxpayer, and ultimately the Patient.

Alternatively there are products already approved by Health Canada that can eliminate some, if not all of these un-necessary strains.  A simple Anticoagulation Monitor which is operated in the same manner as a Diabetic Blood Glucose Monitor is readily available however the cost can be fairly substantial to some. I found out about this product after surgery from the medical staff at the Mazenkowski hospital for Heart health however was informed that the Alberta government, nor most major health insurance providers (Alberta blue Cross) do not cover the monitor.  I applied for coverage from my policy holder (Green Shield Canada) and they too denied my claim.

Initial cost of the Monitors range between 500.00 to 800.00 each and can be used for multiple years.

Costs of Testing Strips is 55.00 for 6 test strips and lancets are already covered as they are used for Diabetic Testing.

This condition affects Hundreds of Albertans, many of which may not be able to afford the initial cost of the machine and ongoing cost of Supplies.  I believe that these items should be treated the same as Diabetic testing equipment as we rely on them to live.

Myself, Due to the nature of my work and not being able to ensure that I will be around a reliable medical Collection lab, came to the decision that I will have to eat the cost of the monitor and test strips, however as stated many aren't so lucky.

Please look into funding or Subsidizing or mandating that medical coverages cover such medical equipment.
