Ida Landers started this petition to Albemarle County Public Schools

As many of us know, Monticello High School is named after Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. While Albemarle County Public Schools may have used this name due to the proximity to Monticello, a historically significant location in the community, the location was a plantation nevertheless. Most of us are aware of Thomas Jefferson’s racism and hypocritical owning of slaves. Monticello, a creation of slave labor, has no place to be the name of a school within our community.

As ACPS has recently renamed Paul H. Cale Elementary to Mountain View, this has set a positive precedent in removing racism from our school nomenclature.

With this in mind, we petition to rename Monticello High School to Sally Hemings High School, as she is a prominent figure among the hundreds enslaved at the historical Monticello plantation.

With this change we can create a more inclusive school environment, rather than asking POC students to attend a school with racism engrained in its very name.
