Initiate a Ballot Referendum to legalize Civil Unions in Alaska
A February 2013 poll by Public Policy Polling (PPP) found that 67% of Alaska voters support either marriage equality or civil unions. While civil unions stop short of marriage equality, voters in other states with constitutional bans on marriage equality have nonetheless passed civil unions afterward (e.g., Nevada, Oregon, Wisconsin). Civil unions would increase societal acceptance of same-sex relationships and would show Alaskans that same-sex couples deserve marriage rights in committed, loving relationships. Especially after the Proposition 5 loss in Anchorage, a civil unions ballot referendum would re-energize politically-active LGBT Alaskans and their allies.
