Richard Tilton started this petition to Alaska Youth Soccer Association (AYSA)

This petition has been created to ask Alaska Youth Soccer Association (AYSA) to reconsider their decision to move soccer all the way back to Phase II of the COVID-19 management protocol. We would like AYSA to reevaluate and consider moving back only one step to Phase III of the COVID-19 management protocol. Soccer in Anchorage has recently been operating in Phase IV and there has not been one identified incident of infection or spread of COVID-19 that has been directly attributed to training or playing soccer.  We believe because of this, the decision to move back two phases without the attributed infections/spread to be without merit, and reactionary to the Anchorage Mayor’s latest mandate. Soccer is a team sport where close contact at times is an essential part of a game and practice. Phase II severely limits the ability of the coaches and players to practice beyond just the fundamentals of passing or dribbling.  Practice elements that are more complex and crucial to the development of our players such as Small-sided games are impossible to carry out now due to these distancing restrictions. This reality, coupled with the fact that our practices are being held outdoors on open fields which greatly reduces viral spread is at the core of why we’re asking that the implementation of Phase II be reconsidered.

Additionally, we ask that AYSA consult and research how other sports are operating during COVID in Alaska. There appears to be a disparity with the restrictions being implemented in the sports community...i.e. hockey is currently being played without restriction indoors, baseball is holding outdoor tournaments, and wrestling/boxing/martial arts are still training indoors. Our hope is that with a proper reevaluation which we feel is deserved, we can have an equitable opportunity to safely and productively practice our sport like the other athletes in the state.

COVID-19 is not going away anytime soon. It is unlikely that a “magic bullet” will be discovered in the next few months. The medical community is in agreement that activities/ sports practiced “Outdoors” limits viral spread significantly. It is unreasonable to ask our children to put their development on hold indefinitely.  Therefore, we have to find ways as a community to allow our children to continue participating in worthwhile training sessions.

In conclusion, we again ask that AYSA reevaluates their recent decision to move soccer back to Phase II.
