Ban Single Use Plastic Bags in Halifax NS

Due to China’s import ban on plastics from around the world, Halifax is facing an environmental crisis.   Between 125 and 200 million plastic shopping bags are used annually within the municipality. Most of these are sent to landfill where they never break down. Many are blown into ditches and are carried by the wind into the ocean. Small pieces of plastic ingested by fish are now entering the human food chain. We the undersigned call for a Mandatory Ban on Single Use Plastic Bags in all Grocery Stores in HRM. Other Canadian cities such as Montreal, Victoria and the entire Province of PEI have already done this. It is time for Halifax to take the initiative in order to preserve our environment for future generations.
