The ‘Simple Pleasures’ of Brunswick Heads, New South Wales, Australia are at risk because of the plans the NSW Government has for its prime foreshore assets.  People who believe that public land immediately adjoining a foreshore along a coast or waterway should be kept as permanent public assets need to sign this petition.

The government, through its newly created NSW Crown Holiday Parks Trust (NSWCHPT) and its business entity, North Coast Holiday Parks (NCHP), have on exhibition plans to ‘privatise’ public foreshore lands with their expansion of the caravan parks in Brunswick Heads. This will deny locals access to their traditional foreshore parklands, walkways and swimming holes that have been used by generations of locals.  The government, ‘privatising’ public land in this way, will set a precedent for foreshore land in NSW.  We demand that the walkway be reinstated as an non transferable asset for the wider community.

We strongly object to and reject NSWCHPT and NCHP’s plans because they:

1.    Refuse to re-instate the foreshore walkway along Simpson’s Creek adjoining the Terrace caravan park. Management has allowed this to be blocked/barricaded by caravans and 12 moveable dwellings that could all be relocated within the park.  Instead they want to take the whole length of the foreshore into the caravan park and fence it off for the exclusive use of their clientele.

2.    Plan to expand caravan park activities onto the foreshore land at Ferry Reserve and restrict access to the public boat ramp.

3.    Refuse to get off illegally occupied land at Massy Greene caravan park, zoned for Maritime Purposes for use by the wider community.  This is prime foreshore land adjoining the Brunswick Boat Harbour.

4.    Refuse to develop their caravan parks within the boundaries set by our local Council.  Those boundaries have been set to keep the foreshores in the public interest and not for the exclusive use of caravan park clientele.

NCHP reported on television that it was investing $13m in its upgrade of the caravan parks and parklands in Brunswick Heads.   A document obtained under Freedom of Information for the Minister recommended the long term commercial leasing of the caravan parks.  In the exhibited ‘improvement plans’ reference is made to the powers of the NSWCHPT to enter into commercial leasing.  In these economic times it is not unreasonable to speculate that the NSW Government, in its endeavours to raise revenue, would use public monies to upgrade these prime foreshore assets for either long term commercial leasing and/or sale. It is in the public interest that foreshore walkways are kept outside any commercially operated government business to protect their future as non transferable public assets.

You are urged to sign this petition as a protest against what the NSW government wants to do with our public lands.
