Support the Recommendations of the Community Advisory Committee

Whereas SACSCOC requires updated facilities per Accreditation Standard 3.11.2 "The institution takes reasonable steps to provide a healthy, safe, and secure environment for all members of the campus community." (Institutional environment); and per Accreditation Standard 3.11.3 "The institution operates and maintains physical facilities, both on and off campus, that appropriately serve the needs of the institution’s educational programs, support services, and other mission-related activities." (Physical facilities);

Whereas the dilapidated facilities at St. Philips College have been prioritized by the Community Advisory Committee as failing to provide "a healthy, safe, and secure environment" for "the institution's educational programs";

Whereas the needs for new educational facilities for the Westside and the Southside have also been deemed as priorities by the Community Advisory Committee;

Whereas the Math and English facilities at San Antonio College are beset with chronic mold issues in buildings which have long since outlived their expected utility as "a healthy, safe, and secure environment for all members of the campus community";

Whereas all students working to achieve their educational goals must spend a significant portion of their time in Math and English facilities;

Whereas the model for combining these important Gatekeeper Courses and the support services for them exists at Northwest Vista College;

Whereas monies for these projects could be gained by reducing the size of the proposed construction for the District Support Offices;

Whereas additional monies could be gained by cancelling all Franklin Covey contracts and moving those monies into the capital improvement account for construction of new facilities;

Whereas District Administrators and Board Trustees could voluntarily forego any travel over the next three years and redistribute those monies to the bond proposal;

We the undersigned urge the Alamo Colleges Board of Trustees to vote for the priorities identified by the Community Advisory Committee in addition to the recommendations of this petition to alleviate any accreditation concerns and begin building trust again with the community they serve.
