Why this petition matters

We want remote kids in the Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) to use the same curriculum for remote kids as what is being offered to the Flex kids.

Continuity in Curriculum is very important for young children. Not all curriculums are the same and nor do they emphasize on teaching in the same way. Let us take Eureka Math as an example.

According to EdReports.org, while many curricula and textbooks on the market today describe themselves as being “aligned” with the new standards, the content is virtually unchanged from the past. Publishers have merely associated elements of the outdated content with various new standards. Eureka Math was developed specifically to meet the new standards and is the only comprehensive curriculum fully aligned with the standards for grades K-8.

Eureka Math follows emphasizes comprehension of concepts as opposed to just rote learning. While a curriculum can teach the process for solving a problem (i.e., 12 - 2 = 10), Eureka Math focuses on trying to teach kids, why 12 - 2 = 10.

Teaching mathematics as a "story," Eureka Math builds students’ knowledge logically and thoroughly to help them achieve deep understanding. While this approach is unfamiliar to those of us who grew up memorizing mathematical facts and formulas, it has been tested and proven to be the most successful method in the world.

If the remote kids in AUSD spend a year not leaning the building blocks of math through comprehension of concepts, our kids will be left behind the next year. With 15% of families opting to be remote this year, this means we may not have an equitable learning outcome for 15% of the kids in our school system. Please vote so we can get AUSD to provide the same curriculum to the 15% remote kids as they are providing to the 85% of the flex kids.
