Drop all charges against police victim Albert Haedinger/Tekpatl!

Once again, police officers are being held unaccountable for unjustified violence and vicious brutality while placing blame on the VICTIM!

This time, a peaceful leader & father's permanent freedom is being threatened to cover up these atrocities.

What happened:

On March 9, 2012, UC Berkeley Police Department (UCBPD) officers viciously attacked and brutalized  Albert Haedinger/Tekpatl, a cultural teacher volunteering his time to teach a class about Native traditions before the Sunrise Ceremony, which celebrates the Mexica (Meh-she-ka) New Year in San Jose, Ca. The class ended late, and Tekpatl and another teacher were invited by students to stay overnight in a UC Berkeley dormitory before leaving for the Sunrise Ceremony early the next morning.

It was very late, and Tekpatl, battling a throat infection, woke up to gargle, using the communal bathroom. Other dormitory residents profiled him as a homeless man and called the police.

UCBPD officers approached Tekpatl while in a bathroom stall. He cooperated with the officers, handing them his ID and following instructions. The police officers' tone began to make him fearful that he might be arrested before being given an opportunity to explain his circumstances, and so he ran back to his room hoping others in the room could help establish his reason for being in the dorm.

Result:

Instead of listening to, or even scolding Tekpatl, the officers commenced to hold him down and beat his shins with batons multiple times, in front of the other occupants.

Ironically, Albert Haedinger/Tekpatl was charged with:

a. causing serious bodily injury to an officer (?!)

b. disturbing the peace

c. obstruction of justice

d. resisting arrest

Consequences:

There are no witnesses to Tekpatl causing any bodily injury, and logically, it is difficult to conceive how a peaceful teacher could cause "serious bodily injury" to two ARMED & TRAINED police officers, much less those officers being able to chase him and retaliate while suffering "serious bodily injury".

Tekpatl was convicted in a North Carolina case that is still under wide scrutiny and suspicion even now, 18 years later. While unfortunate, this current incident should have no greater implications than a small misdemeanor trial.

HOWEVER, the District Attorney's office is threatening to pursue charges and add a 3rd strike to Tektpal's record - effectively threatening him with LIFE IMPRISONMENT, for what ultimately amounts to teaching his culture, being beaten up, and being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Why You Must Help:

After watching Trayvon Martin, Oscar Grant, Amadou Diallo, Sean Bell, Manuel Diaz and countless other lives be destroyed or taken with minimal accountability, we must take a stand!

We cannot allow another innocent man, teacher & father's life be utterly DESTROYED to cover-up the violent excesses of a police department that feels it is beyond accountability.

This could be your cousin, brother, best friend, husband....or you.

Let your voice be heard!

Tell the Alameda County Deputy District Attorney to DROP all charges against Albert Haedinger/Tekpatl now!

Thank you in advance for your prayers and support.

Letter to
Alameda County Deputy District Attorney John Creighton
I just signed the following petition addressed to: John Creighton, Alameda County Deputy District Attorney.

Please drop all charges against police victim Albert Haedinger/Tekpatl!

Once again, police officers are being held unaccountable for unjustified violence and vicious brutality while placing blame on the VICTIM!

This time, a peaceful leader & father's permanent freedom is being threatened to cover up these atrocities.

There is are no witnesses nor credible evidence that Albert "Tekpatl" Haedinger committed serious bodily injury, intentionally or unintentionally, against a police officer. Yet strong evidence exists that HE suffered 'serious bodily injury' - without just cause!

Mr. Haedinger is a father, community leader, upstanding citizen AND state employee. There is no reason why a potential LIFE SENTENCE should be pursued against him, under these circumstances.

In the true interest of justice, we implore you to please drop all charges against Albert "Tekpatl" Haedinger

Sincerely,
