Carolyn Wilson started this petition to Alamance County Government

If you've never been to jail in Alamance county, you're lucky. If you've ever been held in the jail here, you know about all of the problems I am speaking of:

- Bedbugs and Recluse spiders are feeding on the inmates. (Realize also, that some people are held here before they've been before a judge.) The bed bugs then end up as a health issue because they're spread throughout the community when the inmates are released.

THEY NEED AN EXTERMINATOR

- Visitors have to sit in a room full of computer screens with a phone receiver attached. You wait until the inmate is taken to their computer screen, then their image is on the screen and you may begin speaking with them. If that isn't bad enough (because the inmate is looking at their monitor to see you and nobody is able to see a person's eyes because they're looking at a monitor), you can't hear anything they say. I asked a jailer about it. He said that the inmates keep damaging the equipment and they're not going to repair it!

THERE NEEDS TO BE A REGULAR VISITATION AREA WITH FACE TO FACE VISITING...EVEN IF IT'S THROUGH GLASS.

When an inmate arrives, they are not given enough food to eat. They have to pay out of pocket for soap, deodorant, a comb, toothpaste, or toothbrush. They have a canteen to purchase more food. Now, when a visitor wants to give an inmate money for these items, there is a fee for that:. $3 for cash and $5 for a credit card. The only way to avoid that is to send a money order, which takes longer for them to receive it!

THEY MAKE ENOUGH MONEY TO PROVIDE NECESSITIES FOR THE INMATES. Remember, some of these people have not yet been before a judge and may be innocent!

- Our newer jail has received federal funding to hold illegal aliens for ICE. This same sheriff, Terry Johnson, has been brought before a judge on charges of discrimination by ACLU. This county should be rolling in dough!! Why don't we have enough money for every child in school to have their own school books, and not have to share!

We need to end privatized correctional facilites. We need to let ICE do their job, and let the police and sheriff departments do theirs!
