A Petition for Sunday Voting and an Additional Early Voting Site to Improve Voting Access and Safety for African Americans in Alamance County

Dear Alamance County Board of Elections Members,

We urge the Alamance County Board of Elections (BOE) to address the needs of voters in Alamance County, and African American voters in particular, by the adoption of two measures to improve voting access and health safety during the upcoming 2020 presidential election. We ask that weekend early voting include the addition of a day of Sunday voting, and we ask that early voting locations include the addition of a fifth early voting site located in North Burlington.

Sunday is the only day many voters can conveniently vote, and African Americans are especially underserved when denied the option of Sunday voting. African Americans in Alamance County voted on weekends during early voting at almost double the rate as compared to weekday early voting in the 2016 presidential election. Adding the option of Sunday voting in Alamance County is essential to ensuring voting access for the county’s African American voters.

Alamance County’s African American voters have also been underserved by the county’s failure to provide an early voting site in North Burlington. The North Burlington zip code, the area of Alamance County with the most African American voters, accounted for the second-highest number of early voters in our county during the 2016 Presidential election, but contained no early voting sites. The top early voting zip code, West Burlington, contained two early voting sites. The third and fourth highest early voting zip codes, in Graham and Mebane, both contained early voting sites. To provide equitable access to voting in Alamance County, North Burlington must be provided an early voting site in the 2020 presidential election.

Finally, our national health crisis makes the expansion of early voting a top priority for the upcoming election, and with African Americans disproportionately affected by the coronavirus, health safety at polling locations is consequently an even greater issue for Alamance County’s African American voters. As voter participation surges and voters seek to avoid crowds at the polls, adopting expanded early voting access will be invaluable in the effort to keep voters safe in our county.

To conclude, we urge the Alamance County Board of Elections to provide fairer and safer elections for African American voters by including a day of Sunday voting during the early voting period and by the addition of an early voting site in North Burlington. By adopting these improvements, the Alamance County Board of Elections can provide greater access to the ballot for every voter in Alamance County.
