Deny Plum Creek's Comprehensive Plan Amendment Changes

This petition had 391 supporters

Plum Creek, a national corporation and the largest land owner in Alachua County, is asking the Alachua County Commission for dozens of special favors to allow it to intensely develop much of the area east of Newnan’s Lake all the way to SR 301 & Hawthorne - an area that is now rural communities, timber land, and wetlands.

Plum Creek’s proposal, known as Envision Alachua, will create a sprawling new urban center of 11,000 acres with up to 10,500 homes and 15 million square feet of industrial and commercial space (the equivalent of 15 Oaks Malls.) Along with this will come devastation of our wetlands and water supply, wildlife corridors, and peaceful communities in east Alachua.

We believe that Alachua County’s existing Comprehensive Plan, created after many years of public hearings and citizen input, offers a better blueprint for the future prosperity of our community.  This plan protects our environment and the existing urban and rural centers. It supports well-designed residential and non-residential communities by steering mixed-use growth to suitable areas adjacent to existing cities, and requiring open-space set-asides.

We, a group of concerned citizens, have formed a group called Stand By Our Plan to support Alachua County’s Comprehensive Plan’s policies which are specifically designed to protect county wetlands and contain sprawl.  We oppose Plum Creek Timber Corporation’s efforts to overturn our Comprehensive Plan in order to build a new city in the most remote, wild part of our county.   Why should we allow this corporation to destroy our wetlands, further impair our precious water quality, and build a city on top of our watershed?
