I am a parent with students who have an immune deficiency requiring certain building standards for them to be in to best maintain their health. For 5 years we were never informed about a 504 plan. Once we found out about our rights we were awarded a 504 this year.

MPS has a Student Support Services Director Sophia Johnson who is also the district 504 coordinator. She knows full well our boys conditions as she has given zone variances in years past and it requires us to transport our children 14 miles one way to school. This comes at an extreme expense on a tight budget. Even after a 504 was issued we are still denied transportation when there would be no increased expense on the school system as there is a bus that picks up directly behind our home and then in the afternoon bus 1507 drops a half mile from our home at Goodwyn Middle. The reason for the denial is "because buses do not have central heat and air." One of the requirements set forth by the doctor is that, "their classroom environment be one with central heat and air." There is no vehicle made that has central heat and air.

Our daughter has been denied the ability to begin her education this year even after providing the doctors statement on Sept 12. There is an Elementary school next door to the school our boys attend but that is not an option for us according to the superintendent and her staff. The administrators at Blount and Carr do not understand why. They said it only makes sense especially since we have to provide the transportation.

I have spoken at the school board meetings in August, October, and November. Five hours before the last meeting I received a phone call telling me we could enroll our daughter in a school the complete opposite direction of the one our boys attend or I could put her I one 4miles from the one our boys attend. We can not even put her in the one our boys attended. It is a crying shame that our children with disabilities are being denied a free appropriate public education.

I am signing the petition because I am the parent of a child who has learning disabilities and the proposed changes directly work against his rights to achieve the best education possible.
