J. Marion Sims was a gynecologist in the 1800s who used enslaved African-American women as guinea pigs for his experimental surgeries. He performed multiple, disfiguring, excruciating genital surgeries on these women without anesthesia, though it was widely available at the time.
According to Dr. Sims, black women didn't feel pain like white women, despite the fact that his own notes talk about a slave who was in such agony from his experiments that he thought she was going to die.
Despite his inhumane tests on African American slaves, Sims was named “the father of modern gynecology”, and there are four statues honoring him, one of which stands on the grounds of the Alabama State Capitol.
