The exchange is an requirement by federal law for every state that would create a consumer friendly exchange to help uninsured Alabamians and small businesses:
1. Compare health insurance plans that meet quality standards
2. Enroll in coverage that is right for them
3. Get tax credits ( on a sliding scale by income or payroll ) to lower premium costs.
The 2012 Legislature considered, but did not pass a bill to set up our state exchange, which Bentley said he would veto. Although we have until Jan. 1st, 2014 to comply with the federal law, while we are waiting: over 750,000 Alabamians have no health insurance, including over 100,000 children, with thousands more citizens underinsured.
Alabama can not afford to wait two more years!
