Alabama has had a vibrant abundance of wildlife long before it became a state in 1819. Likewise, there has been a population of people within this state that are dedicated outdoors-men and hunters who appreciate and respect the resources of this state. The wood duck population in Alabama has flourished under the laws and guidelines that brought the species back form near extinction so many years ago. Thus the bird is popular among waterfowl hunters here in Alabama for their beauty and the challenge involved with harvesting these animals. With all that being said it is possible to enjoy the sport of chasing after wood ducks in an early September season coinciding with early blue-wing teal season. States such as Tennessee, Kentucky, and Florida have such seasons and have seen success with them seeing no downturn in the number and perseverance of each states wood duck population. This coming from the wood duck's ability to find forage and habitat in places foreign to other waterfowl, as well as being the only North American duck that regularly has two broods in a single year. With this the waterfowlers of Alabama would and could be able to have an early September season for wood ducks. This would both help expand the sport of waterfowl hunting in Alabama and engage a younger group of hunters who would better enjoy the milder September climate of Alabama.
