Make Suffolk County Parks Affordable for Nonprofits

As a member of the Boy Scouts of America organization and a constituent, I urge you to consider a reduction of price for not-for-profit organizations’ use of Suffolk County Parks.

Our organization has a rich history of promoting conservation and encouraging youth to “get outside” and take advantage of the natural resources surrounding us. Thankfully, Suffolk County provides a number of County Parks to allow us to do so close to home. However, the consecutive price increases over the last two fiscal years have placed an undue burden on the already thinning budgets of not-for-profit organizations in Suffolk County. With no avenue to turn to for special circumstances requests, not-for-profit organizations have been forced to find alternate locations for our District and Council-wide camping events.

Every fall we hold a camporee at Cathedral Pines County Park in Middle Island, New York where we have approximately 800 scouts in attendance. In 2015 reserving the park for a two night stay cost $3,400. In 2016, due to the price increase, the reservation cost increased to $4,800. This year the price increased once more and we are unable to afford the $6,400 that it would cost to use our local County Park.

I urge you to explore options to institute a not-for-profit organization pricing model for Suffolk County Parks so that the Boy Scouts and other youth serving organizations can continue to partner with the Parks Department in serving the youth of Long Island. Thank you for your consideration.
