Change Texas Laws to Protect Disabled Persons Like we Protect Our Children
My adult daughter who has IDD (Intellectual Developmental Disability), with the mind of a small child, was sexually abused by someone we’ve known for over a decade. I discovered a video of one of the attacks. Due to her disability, she was unable to tell me about the abuse. We are now in the battle of all battles as we seek justice for her as well as other survivors. I am wanting to get the verbiage changed in the Texas Penal Code which will add disabled and elderly persons to the same protections set in place for children whom have been victims of continuous abuse. This change will enhance the punishments for these types of offenses.
When I discovered the video, I confronted the defendant and he jumped out of a window and fled. He was hidden by family members whom helped him to assume a fake identity and bussed him to California. We hired a fugitive recovery agent who worked with Orange County Sheriffs to find and arrest the defendant. He was captured and extradited back to Harris County. He is currently being held under a $75k bond in the Harris County Jail. Yesterday, the grand jury accepted an additional charge and the defendant is now charged with 2 counts of aggravated sexual assault against a elderly/disabled person.
Everyone talks about the “me too” movement, military and big named stars involved in sex crimes but no one is talking about our most vulnerable population! When will people care about DISABLED PERSONS?? Why aren’t the laws designed to protect them like we protect our children? My daughter has the mind of a child and will never be able to make “adult” decisions without help!! When we will protect and advocate for ALL??
