Mike H started this petition to Air New Zealand

In 2010, Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia signed a trans-Tasman alliance that allowed Virgin Australia to service routes from Dunedin to three Australian destinations. Within four years, Virgin had terminated two of those routes (Sydney and Melbourne), without evidentiary statistics to back their decision. At the time of termination, Dunedin to Melbourne passenger demand was up 16% on the previous year, and Sydney was up 6%. 1

In the six years since, Dunedin’s population has grown rapidly with the popularity of the city as a home on the increase. In the one year ending March 2019, the population grew 2.5% 2. Along with the increase in population, comes an increase in disgruntled travellers, who are left with often less than appealing options, usually a layover in Christchurch or Auckland, and along with it a significant and unattractive delay in getting to their destination.

COVID-19 will obviously call for many businesses, particularly airlines, to reevaluate their strategic plan for regrowth and recovery. We call for Air New Zealand, as our flag carrier airline, to pick up the slack left for Dunedin travellers and reinstate operating a Dunedin to Sydney route, before another airline does.
