Dear Mr. Brooks:
We, the undersigned, are writing today in response to the Flock Realty advertisement in the October 2017 issues of Urban Times. Kurt Flock, creator of the advertisement, refers to former Fall Creek residents as "unholy habitats and vice lords." In addition, he describes the systematic removal of former residents with the cooperation of 'banks, brokers, and bureaucrats." According to the Flocks, Indianapolis residents who can afford to currently build with them are "holy and righteous." The language utilized demonstrates a lack of respect for the former residents, is offensive to those working to preserve existing neighborhoods, and contradicts one of the October issue's cover stories, "Illustrating What a Neighborhood Ought to Be: Just, Equitable, and Economically Vibrant." Public attempts at clarifying the Flock's intended message have not proved fruitful, and in fact, have further illustrated their undignified intent.
We are asking for a swift response from the Urban Times editorial team, which includes a retraction of the advertisement and an agreement to stop running Flock Realty advertisements.
In addition, we request that your publication commits to presenting grassroots community organizations & their efforts to create and sustain affordable housing practices; processes meant to disrupt the current top down model approach that disenfranchises many of Indianapolis's neighborhoods and peoples.
