Allow Students Who Live Out Of District To Attend LASA Who Have Already Been Accepted

Two weeks ago the Liberal Arts and Science Academy sent (LASA) sent out letters of acceptance or denial to students across Austin, Texas Around 40 of the students who received acceptance letters lived out of district, and recently received a call that said that they could not go to LASA regardless of whether they moved into the Austin Independent School District by the start of the school year. Many parents were shocked, as the rules at the time of application stated that anybody was allowed to apply to go as long as they were living in the district by the time the school year started. Apparently, a week before the letters were sent the AISD School Board enacted a new policy in place that said that if the applicant  was not living in the district at the time of application then they would not be allowed to attend LASA. This policy is to be retroactively enforced and therefore, LASA was then forced to rescind the acceptance letters of the 40 students who already received notice of their acceptance to LASA. With the support of others we believe we can change and approve the following:

  1. We request that the students who received the acceptance letters that were rescinded be allowed to attend LASA for the 2016-2017 year if they move into district before the start of the school year; thus enforcing the rules in place at the time that the application was due
  2. We request that in the future, students are not instantly denied just because of where they live. We want students to be accepted or rejected based on their skill alone. If living in a specific place matters so much, then allow others to move into district before the school year starts to give everyone a fair chance.
  3. We want to prevent the formation of policies like the one Austin ISD made in the middle of an application process that would affect whether students get in or not.

If we cannot do this, we would ask that the policy made the week before the letters were sent would not take effect for another year to give every student this year the fair chance to go with the rules applied at the time of application.
