Ask the Government to review NHS staff expenses payments
0 have signed. Let’s get to 2,500!
Agenda for Change currently set the pay and expenses scales for all NHS staff. As it stands, community workers like myself - social workers, nurses, occupational therapists, support workers, etc - are paid at a set rate of 56 pence per mile for the first 3,500 miles and then just 20 pence per mile when we go over this. We do not receive any other contribution to our travel despite being required to use our own cars to carry out our roles. Our roles are centred around providing care to people in their own homes, so for us there is no option other than to drive.
For local teams, this current allowance may be enough, however lots of NHS community teams cover large areas where choosing shorter routes just is not possible. We frequently find ourselves going over the 3,500 mile allowance. Most of us NHS staff are struggling financially anyway, so towards the end of the financial year we end up effectively paying to go to work. This is wrong, and should be reviewed immediately.
