The charity Remembering Srebrenica Scotland has launched an education pack aimed at teaching secondary schools pupils about the events in the Bosnian town in 1995 in which 8,000 Bosnian Muslims were killed.

We believe that this focus on a single terrible incident in the Balkans risks politicising genocide. Scottish children may be the subject of propaganda, the enemy of education.

The charity, chaired by former Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, Very Rev Dr Lorna Hood, states:

“Many young Scots are unaware that more than 8,000 people, mainly Muslim men and boys, were murdered in the Bosnian town by the Bosnian Serb army in 1995”

We find this assertion to be disingenuous.

A casual survey will show that the events in Srebrenica have been widely publicised by news outlets in the West, including in Scotland. Annual commemorations continue to make headlines.

Sadly, other horrific crimes have been shielded from public view in Scotland.

Operation Storm conducted by Croatian forces in 1992 lead to mass killings and the ethnic cleansing of hundreds of thousands of Serbs. This war crime was allegedly committed with the complicity of Western powers.

During WW2, the hidden genocide against Serbs, Jews and Roma in the region claimed up to a million lives. A death camp was established especially for children.

In the vicinity of Srebrenica in the years preceding 1995, evidence has been presented of Serbian villagers slaughtered by Bosnian Muslim forces.

None of these atrocities have entered the consciousness of the public in Scotland, least of all secondary school pupils.

If we are to learn the lessons of genocide we must go beyond victims sanctioned by society as “politically correct” and of perpetrators from ethnic groups that have been demonised as inhuman.
