Africans to Congressional Black Caucus (CBC): Black Immigration Reform Guidelines NOW!

The National African Immigrants and Refugees Health Advocate Program (AIR Health) started this petition to Communication Director Ayofemi Kirby, Congressional Black Caucus and

The Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) lack of an Immigration Taskforce and a CBC Black Immigrant Agenda and Guidelines for the Immigration Reform, puts millions of Black immigrants (Afro-Latinos, Afro-Caribbeans, Afro-Europeans African immigrants and the many other foreign-borns of African descendants) in danger of being left out of the comprehensive reform.

Africans are concerned that lack of a Black Immigrant Agenda within the CBC, may have caused the President to omit mentioning the contributions of recent African immigrants on both of his major Immigration speeches in El Paso, TX and Las Vegas last week.

So we are calling on the CBC to immediately consider establishing an Immigration Taskforce and produce Black Immigration Guidelines within the Congressional Black Caucus in the foot steps of Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus.

Per US Census, the top 10 U.S. Cities with the highest numbers of African immigrants are ALL in CBC member districts, thus CBC has an obligation to the millions of African-born tax payers in the CBC Districts to effective represent Africans in Washington.

With the Immigration Hearings starting today, we are calling on the CBC to take a more proactive approach and Dr. King's fierce urgency in engaging Africans in their districts.

The Cameroon American Council is proposing:

1. An immediate establishment of a Black Immigrantion Taskforce.

2. Having a CBC African Immigrant Advisory group, similar to what other jurisdistions such as Governor of Maryland, Mayor of DC, Mayor of Philadelphia, The Mayor of Newark, NJThe Bronx Borough President have done- for direct input on the African community.

3.. Calling on CBC to direct its members to have African Immigrant sensitive forums in their respestive districts to discuss such issues such as out of status student visas, over stay visitor visas, assylum/refugees challenges...issues usually left out of the mainstream immigration discussions.

 Thank you,

Sylvie Bello
