Violence erupted in Cameroon’s English-speaking regions in October 2016 after a call by lawyers and teachers for structural changes in the legal and education systems in the English parts of the country were met with lethal force by the government’s military and police forces. Since then the violence has claimed hundreds of lives and loss of property worth millions. Hundreds of thousands of English-speaking Cameroonians have been forced to flee their homes as the army indiscriminately burned down entire villages.
We call on all African Heads of State and Government meeting at the 31st African Union Summit to take concrete actions against Cameroon to stop the killings in the English-speaking regions of the country.
