To: Aliamanu Elementary School Administration

As the parents of Aliamanu Elementary School students, we demand that our children return to a full-time, in-person classroom learning environment immediately. We request that the AES administration commit to full reopening of classrooms no later than March 22, 2021 to begin the 4th quarter of instruction.

Our children have been subjected to a disrupted learning environment for a full year and have suffered academically and emotionally as a result. The Hawaii Department of Health letter to the Department of Education published on February 26, 2021 states "...we have also learned that schools are not, as initially anticipated, amplifiers of COVID-19 transmission. Rather, schools are one of the safest environments for children when it comes to COVID-19." This is a clear admission by public health authorities that our children belong in the classroom now. Every day counts!

We are asking the AES administration to take whatever actions and commit whatever resources are necessary to meet the 22 March date for reopening. Our request affords more than three weeks from date of the DOH letter to implement school reconstitution plans. We will not accept further disruptions to our children's education.

Current guidance from the DOE and DOH authorizes reopening at your discretion with no requirement for additional directives. As evidence of this, many public elementary schools on Oahu have returned to full in-person instruction as of January 2021, to include Kamilo`iki Elementary in Hawaii Kai and Hahaione Elementary in Honolulu among others. Furthermore, private schools throughout the state have been in the classroom full time for the entire school year with class sizes up to 24 students. Why have these children been afforded optimal learning conditions while ours have not?

We stand with you in support of reopening classrooms for the fourth quarter and standby to assist in any capacity necessary to meet this goal.
