Advocation for Prevention of Discrimination within the Child Welfare System
Why this petition matters
Something very prevalent but often invisible in a community is child welfare. Depending on the type of community, this may not be the priority to the community as other things might be prioritized first. However, this is an important issue to address in a community and something to regularly check in on for the reason that the welfare of children can be a good indication of the well-being of the community as a whole.
A current policy that should be advocated for is the John Lewis Every Child Deserves a Family Act. This act was created to prohibit discrimination against children, families, and individuals because of their religion, sex (including sexual orientation and sexual identity), and marital status by federally-funded child welfare service providers. Someone cannot be turned away when they are trying to adopt or foster a child based on who they are, love, or what they believe. As long as they qualify they should be able. There are more than 400,000 children in foster care and they could have loving, safe homes if people were not being discriminated against. Another part of this policy will help children who are a part of the LGBTQ+ community to not be discriminated against and get the proper care that they need. This is an important matter that needs to be addressed, which is why this policy needs to be passed into law.
