Why this petition matters

Started by Julia Mohr

Gender identity is a person’s own sense of self. This identity does not have to line up with the gender one was assigned at birth because gender is nothing biological. Some of the many different gender identities include cisgender, transgender, gender non-conforming, and gender non-binary. With so many different genders in the world today, it’s important that we take all the necessary measures to make sure that everyone feels included throughout each of their daily lives. However, since cisgender women and men are seen as the “norm,” many offices, schools, and businesses don’t always take these measures to be inclusive, especially when it comes to restrooms. In order to be more inclusive and welcoming, gender-inclusive restrooms must come into play.

Currently, Salisbury University has 18 gender-inclusive restrooms on campus, which sounds like a good thing, but there are some faults here. Specifically, not all buildings on campus have gender-inclusive restrooms, the available gender-inclusive restrooms are often hard to find and are located in inconvenient places, and men’s restrooms don’t have period products in them.

We would appreciate it if you would take the time to sign this petition for more gender-inclusive restrooms, as well as to make them more accessible.

The outcomes we would like to achieve from this petition are:

1. Each building will have at least one gender-inclusive restroom.

2. Men's bathrooms will have feminine hygiene products in them.

3. Gender-inclusive bathrooms will be moved to more centrally located areas of the building, easier to locate.

4. Maps will be posted, detailing where these bathrooms can be found.

5. A campus-wide email will be sent out to inform the community of the existence of said bathrooms and where they are located.
