Food insecurity is having insufficient food consistently due to a lack of financial resources. Studies have shown that students particularly low-income experience food insecurity. Institutions report that the COVID 19 pandemic may be worsening the issues of food insecurity, as many students and their families are experiencing job loss and other financial challenges. CalFresh is essential to many students in college. However, DACA students are excluded from this benefit.

Solution:

Having access to CalFresh means having access to opportunities to thrive. It reduces hunger and poverty. Currently, DACA students do not qualify for CalFresh because of their immigration status. All students should have the food they need to thrive.
