The month of April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month.
Are you familiar with House Bill 2037? This bill introduces Erin's Law. This bill asks for the state board of education to implement statewide standards that will have public school teachers (preK-12 grade) receive annual training and education on identifying sexual abuse. The training will also include social and emotional training in order to help students identify appropriate and inappropriate conduct and actions they may to protect against sexual abuse as well as methods for reporting any instances of sexual abuse.
According to erinslaw.org, 1 in 4 boys and 1 in 6 girls have experienced sexual abuse by the age of 18. About 90% of children who have experienced sexual abuse know their abuser. Less than 10% are experiences with strangers. There are 42 million SURVIVORS of child sexual abuse in America; 3 million are children which would fill 46 national football stadiums!!!
Out of 50 states, 37 states have already taken action and have passes Erin's Law since 2019. There are currently 13 states that have not passed Erin's Law and Kansas is one of them. Let us all help our children not feel voiceless! We can ensure that children are taught to protect themselves and feel as they have a voice. Erin's Law empowers survivors of sexual abuse to find their voice, advance their healing and educate others. Please help us pass this law in Kansas to begin to make a difference for these children!
