Advocates for Jersey City started this petition to SenCunningham@njleg.org

Under the guise of a departmental "restructure", Mayor Steve Fulop is planning to dismantle the current Jersey City Department of Recreation and force department staff, many of whom have been working for the City Rec department, serving our community for years to "re-apply" for their already civil service protected jobs. This is not only highly insensitive, especially during the upcoming holiday season, but it also illegal and smells of a political agenda.

In a very curt and condescending letter from Human Resources Director, Mark Bunbury, employees were told that "Although the City appreciates the service that every Recreation employee has provided to the prior Department, in the new Department of Rec. and YD, we want to ensure that we have everyone in the best job for their skill set..."  That's code for thank you for your service but we don't need you anymore.

The letter also stated, "To be considered for any role in the new Department of Rec. and YD, you must apply to a job posting, even if the role is the one you are currently in." And employees should "apply regardless of the fact that the salary/schedules are not listed right now. We will provide that information to you at a later date and time." That's like asking someone to sign a blank check and don't worry about it, we'll fill it in later. Does that even make sense? Employees were given a deadline of October 11, 2019, now changed to October 18, 2019 to apply for a position or risk being transferred out of the department or possibly lose their jobs altogether.

As citizens of Jersey City, you know those who work for Recreation. They live right in the community with you. They attend your church, mosque or synagogue. Their children go to school with your children. They work every day with the young people in Jersey City in every neighborhood in every ward in OUR great city from Greenville to downtown, Journal Square to the Heights. They are the coaches and mentors to your children. You've seen them on the basketball courts, the soccer fields, the football fields, the baseball diamonds, the running track, and swimming pools. They are always there protecting and nurturing our most valuable resource - our children.

Please DON'T turn your back on them. Sign this petition and JOIN US is saying to Mayor Fulop, HANDS OFF RECREATION!
