Over a hundred children with congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) would be identified in Michigan each year as a result of universal newborn screening. These infants can be treated with antiviral medication and receive early intervention services. This can literally save these infants from deafness, intellectual disability, and visual and physical impairment. This screening program will pay for itself 10 times over in greatly reducing special education costs, lost earnings, and resulting cost of SSI.

As a pediatric physical therapist, I've worked with several children with severe disabilities due to CMV; It's a beast that could be easily tested for through standard neonatal screening and allow for prompt intervention to minimize the consequences. Thank you for bringing this forward!

My son was born in 1992 with congenital CMV. He is DeafBlind, has autism, cerebral palsy, and multiple other conditions. I cannot believe that 29 years later we are still fighting to get CMV screening!

My youngest daughter was an IUGR baby born at 31 weeks and 5 days. The only reason we found out she was a CMV baby is because the NICU tested her due to her low birth rate at her gestational age.
