Alison Tomlin started this petition to Ofcom and

We need to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees in order to avoid causing irreversible damage to the planet. One of the changes we must make to do this is to massively reduce how much meat and dairy we eat. Meat production contributes to global warming in 3 ways: firstly, billions of acres of rainforest are cut down each year to create grazing land for cattle. Secondly, huge areas are also cut down so the land can be used to grow soya for animal feed. Rainforest deforestation contributes to global warming because the rainforest is capable of absorbing vast amounts of CO2, thus limiting global warming; the fewer trees there are, the more of the CO2 we create stays in the atmosphere warming the earth. Lastly, the animals themselves create a huge amount of methane, another extremely harmful greenhouse gas.

We are all influenced by advertising. That's what it's for, to show us the buying choices we have and to influence those choices.

If we can change the way food is advertised we can change the way it is bought.

Ofcom and the Advertising Standards Agency need to put regulation in place in order to force supermarkets and restaurants to advertise far more vegetarian and vegan options and far less meat and dairy. There is a huge range of plant-based meat & dairy replacements available in all big supermarkets and restaurants nowadays but they are not advertised anywhere near as much as meat & dairy. The more the alternatives are advertised, the more people will buy them.

This petition proposes that new regulations should: restrict how many meat and dairy products are shown in one advert, put quotas in place for what proportion of products shown in one advert must be meat & dairy free, and state what proportion of adverts must show only plant-based products.

Small changes like this could make a huge difference to peoples' buying habits and create the cultural shift needed to significantly reduce the amount of meat & dairy we eat.
