Alive After Five...but only if you drive?

We're calling on NE1 to offer free bus and Metro travel into the city centre after 5pm.
For the last nine years the 'Alive After Five' initiative run by Newcastle Business Improvement District (NE1 Ltd) has transformed Newcastle city centre in the evenings. The streets have been busy and vibrant, more people are able to visit our shops and leisure attractions, and the feel of the city has radically improved. Now that bid is up for renewal.
As part of Alive After Five, NE1 has funded free parking after 5pm in the city council's multi-storey car parks to attract people into the centre. But there's a problem - Newcastle city centre has illegal levels of air pollution and traffic congestion causes disruption to bus services, adding to the problem. The city needs to act fast to solve this public health emergency.
42% of households in Newcastle have no access to a car. For these households there's no subsidy from NE1. We feel it's very unfair to be offering financial incentives to car drivers but nothing to those who walk, cycle, or use public transport to get to the city centre. It's time to level the playing field, NE1, for clean air and for equality!
Please sign this petition to call on NE1 to include incentives for people to use public transport to access our city centre after 5pm. Instead of paying for parking to benefit those who can drive and add to air pollution, why not pay for free or reduced bus tickets?
Come on NE1, do you bit for fairness, health, and the city centre environment!
