Why this petition matters
Started by IVO I WELCH
There are many good descriptions of the "Chicago Principles," now adopted by over 80 institutions. A good description can be found at Wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_principles or at https://www.thefire.org/ .
At its base is Voltaire's “I may not agree with what you have to say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” It is the foundation of modernism and liberalism. In the academic context, it entails defending academic freedom and dissent.
UCLA has not yet adopted these principles. It should. Members of the UCLA Academic Senate who agree with this perspective should sign this petition.
