Currently, there is no legal protection for students and staff at the University of Portland who are a part of a sexual minority or a gender non-conforming minority. Our campus is not exempt from sexual discrimination. Empowerment of the LGBTQ community through university policy is one of many essential steps to creating a more inclusive and supportive environment. Please read the letter to the Board of Regents encouraging the Non-Discrimination Policy to be re-evaluated and consider what an impact your support will have on the dignity of the UP community.
- University of Portland Board of Regents
- Rev. E. William Beauchamp, C.S.C.
The University of Portland needs to include “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” among the list of characteristics protected from discrimination regarding opportunities, programs, and employment in the Non-Discrimination Policy. This policy improvement is a vital stepping stone in the path of becoming a more welcoming community. Discrimination and oppression are experienced by not only LGBTQ students, but also faculty and staff at UP. These are the unheard voices at the University of Portland, and this is the student-initiated response to the injustice that affects the dignity of every member of the UP community.
It is consistent with the University’s mission and reasonable Catholic values to fight for the inherent dignity of all humans created in the image and likeness of God. We feel that the University of Portland strives to create equality and a welcoming environment for all students, staff, and faculty, but is hypocritical in its lack of protection of the LGBTQ community from certain forms of discrimination. The progressive Statement on Inclusion addresses respect and true diversity acceptance, but is inadequate as a source of reliable protection or security for many students, staff, and faculty. We expect the Non-Discrimination Policy to be revised at the next Board of Regents meeting as well as an expedient response addressed to the university community expressing the board’s intentions and guarantees.
