stkr bathroom rights
Schools in British Columbia are required to have at least one bathroom stall for every 20 people. The administration of our school has closed many of our bathroom stalls because not all stalls are visible to the hallway cameras. To put this into perspective, a school of about 700 kids has no more than 10 stalls to use. Not having enough stalls in a school is an issue for many reasons such as, being late due to waiting in a line, and girls who are menstruating can not do what is necessary. Because we have nongender specific bathrooms we often find some stalls unusable due to lack of cleanliness. This limits our stall count further. As students we understand why the bathrooms were closed, to punish those with destructive habits, however as the student body we believe this is not a good solution. Punishing the entire school, and taking away from our education by forcing us to go during class is not a good solution. Having to wait in line for one stall in between classes which is 5mins is not acceptable. Going to class with a full bladder is not only disruptive but distracting. The frustration from not being able to exhibit basic human needs takes away from the learning environment. If the bathrooms must have cameras facing the doors, we can establish more supervision. The kids with little school respect will not gain respect for our space by shutting down bathrooms, playing chicken clucking noises on repeat and making our lives more difficult. We are teenagers with all different lifestyles. Those with destructive habits need more support from staff. We understand that the bathrooms are a problem, however we need to be able to relieve ourselves.
