TORCH TIKI LLC began operating this summer and is the most extreme example of a business that property owners should be highly concerned about and is the subject of this petition, but unregulated lake-based businesses are popping up every year.  Why is TORCH TIKI so extreme?  Because it is a full scale water recreation business being run from a residential lake-front lot on Crystal Beach Rd.

The issues are both PUBLIC SAFTEY & PUBLIC NUISANCE caused by the daily business of "TORCH TIKI LLC" and other lake-based businesses.

If you are a property owner on Torch Lake without doubt what is happening on the shores of Crystal Beach Rd is your concern. If left unchecked, we will see many more of these unregulated businesses start to operate in residential neighborhoods, and the next could be next to your home! 

TORCH TIKI LLC as an example:

The owner of Torch Tiki uses his residential property to run all business operations of TORCH TIKI.  At present, this business rents roughly 20 motorized and non-motorized water craft including: pontoon boats, kayaks, paddle boards, and floating water mats.  Like all business, the plan is to expand.

Torch Tiki also is running an unregulated food service barge which is an unregistered, modified pontoon boat. This barge has electric supplied via a generator and propane supplied by a 100 lb tank. This non-motorized barge looks to have been self-built and uninspected, the risk of a fire or electrical discharge into the water are of real concern.  It is manually pulled from his property to the sandbar daily.  All of his equipment is stored nightly on the dock in front of his property to include the modified pontoon boat which operates as the food barge. (see pictures).  There is also a port-a-john on his property for the business use.   

The Crystal Beach property owners from their homes and waterfront have to look at all of rental inventory, stored on roughly a 50 foot dock off his residential property and includes the food barge, jet skis, pontoon boats, kayaks and paddle boards used for rentals.  On more than one occasion the food barge and jet ski have become adrift due to wind and waves and have impacted the surrounding home owners creating a dangerous situation to children and adults in the water and potential damage to personal property. 

This busy business operation started this summer and runs roughly 9am to 6pm. From residential property the barge is provisioned with food, drink and supplies to be sold on the Torch Lake sandbar.  At the end of the day the barge is tied to his dock and trash is removed and the barge is cleaned.  In addition, rental equipment is delivered at his property and to the sandbar and elsewhere on Torch Lake.

We can assure you that no one would want a business like this next to their family home.  If left unchecked, we will surely see more business similar to TORCH TIKI pop-up on the residential shores of Torch Lake.
