We are signing this petition to change school back to the 5 periods a day schedule. We are still in the middle of a pandemic. Families and friends dying, student mental health is significantly decreasing, and so is their motivation. Coming from a student who used to have good grades, online classes has really taken a toll on my grades. Many of my peers have been having the same problem. We all get up at 7 am to get on zoom meetings every weekday at 8 am. While went we went to in person school last year on a 8 am- 3 pm schedule, times have changed. We wake up, attend zoom meetings, and have the rest of the day to complete work. Many students no longer have the right motivation to do their work anymore, or even wake up on time for their classes. Zoom meetings are very repetitive, and don’t really teach us anything. We sit at home all day and hit a submit button to get a grade. While many would rather NOT have zoom at all, because the meetings don’t teach us anything. We all do work on our own. With little to no knowledge of what we are really doing. Many teachers even give a lot of work, and students are struggling to even do one. It may seem like we have a lot of time after classes to get work down, but with the lack of motivation, there really isn’t. Social media, video games, family, even work usually gets in the way. Since we have to social distance, we have came up with new ways to stay entertained, and many of these ways have become addicting. Many students stay up all night and we are too tired to even log in. This has caused many student’s stress levels to increase. We believe that schools should continue to run the 5 class a day schedule because having to log into zoom for 8 classes is too much for us right now. -eiland chai

EDIT:

a comment on this petition :

“It is unhealthy to stare at a computer screen for an extensive amount of time. There is study after study stating that screen time hurts us in all sorts of ways, mentally and physically. On the other hand, if we don’t like the computer; we should go in person...right? Wrong. It is unsafe to physically go back to school. You can take all the precautions necessary, but many students would much rather not take the risk of catching a life-threatening virus. The pandemic surely isn’t over and it is unreasonable to expect students to feel safe. Along with this, school is taxing enough with all of the social and societal issues occurring at this very moment; plus a pandemic. Many other nearby districts in Bergen County are half day schedules, it would be unbecoming to have BHS be the one school running full time. I understand we want a sense of normalcy, but this is no way to do so. People are sick and unhealthy - and adding an extra two periods will make every student at BHS more stressed, and more anxious to even consider submitting an assignment. The majority of us rely on office hours to get the extra help we so desperately need, and now instead more classes will be in replace of our extra time. We think you should reconsider this short-notice decision. It realistically would help all of BHS as a whole.”
