Do you want to read child pornography in your newspaper? I don't! However, the Baxter Bulletin (owned by USA Today/Gannett) thinks the explicit details of the sexual acts in child assault cases should be made public, making their news story read like a script from a pornography film. Do they consider the underage victims in this type of reporting? Do they think about how this reporting could affect future victims? Are they exploiting these young victims for shock value? Stand up for integrity in journalism and tell the Baxter Bulletin that we don't want to read the vile acts of pedophiles.

Underaged victims of sexual assault are often (unnecessarily) ashamed and embarrassed about their situation. Most are scared to report their abuse to authorities. And now, if they live within reporting distance of the Baxter Bulletin, every detail of the crime committed against them will be in the paper for their classmates and neighbors to read. Describing these disgusting acts in their reporting has the potential for detrimental consequences to these victims - depression and suicide are not uncommon in sexually assaulted individuals.

Future victims may be affected as well. A scared sexually assaulted child/teen may be more reluctant to come forward and report the crime if they fear the gory details will be published for all to see.

While the Freedom of Information Act allows these details to be released to the public, the Baxter Bulletin has the ability to show some dignity and decorum by respecting the victims of these crimes. The newspaper may try to claim that these are anonymous victims, but they are not. We live in small towns and descriptors like "German exchange student in Izard County" don't exactly keep one's identity secret.

Please sign this petition to tell the Baxter Bulletin that you want to protect underage victims (and future victims) of sexual assault by keeping quiet about the despicable details of crimes committed against them.
