Address the racism in Bellaire HS baseball team
Why this petition matters
Earlier this week there was a game between Westbury and Bellaire High School.
In this game, the pitchers for the Westbury high school team were Black and Hispanic. When the Black pitcher was on the mound and on base, the Bellaire HS team dugout was making
" Monkey Sounds and doing the Monkey Dance and using the N-word "
so much to the point the field umpire gave them a warning. The Westbury parents stood in disbelief. This continued the whole game.
The Bellaire coaches didn't appear to have reprimanded the team. No adults at bellaire have said anything or taken any action
Sadly, this is the reality many students of color have to face. The Bellaire Baseball Team has a history of racism to the point of not playing good players until senior year and only playing them in the later innings, solely because of the color of their skin.
Not only that, earlier this year Duro Dino, an African American freshman on the baseball team, transferred to another school after being singled out by the coach for having an afro.
He was ridiculed in front of peers and was told "that he needs to cut off his afro if he wants to play baseball because it doesn’t fit “the look” of a Bellaire baseball player.' No action was taken by the Bellaire administration or HISD and both refused to comment on the incident.
Many people were outraged by the racist actions of the Bellaire baseball coaches, players and their parents this week and took to social media, contacted bellaire administration, yet no action was taken besides putting the coach on paid leave.
When no action is taken this kind of racist behavior is encouraged. The student body does not share these views, and believe the Bellaire administration or HISD needs to take action. The coaches and participating students need to be held accountable for their actions so that disgusting behavior like this does
