Add homelessness to New Jersey's Hate Crime Statute

Add homelessness to New Jersey's Hate Crime Statute
In the United States, many states have created laws that fight against hate crimes, or crimes that are committed against a person due to their race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc. However, only seven states have included legislation that covers a very important community: the homeless. People who are homeless are more likely to be victimized by people, and they are less likely to report their assaults to the police to avoid being arrested. Homelessness is seen as a crime in many areas, and many areas have even enacted legislation, known as anti-homelessness legislation, that makes certain actions (sleeping on the streets, sleeping on benches, begging) illegal. Sadly, homelessness is increasing by the year due to the COVID-19 virus, and so are hate crimes. And, after the horrible instance of the serial murderer who shot five homeless men in New York City and Washington D.C., the Victimology Organization at Stockton University wants to make a difference. Therefore, with your help, we can send this petition and our proposal to New Jersey State legislators to help homeless victims who are attacked just for their status. With your signature, New Jersey can be number eight.
