Why this petition matters

Started by MEC Disabilities

July 26th, 2022 marks the 32nd anniversary of the ADA Act being signed in by President George H.W. Bush.

Have you seen a child at a playground or school where they cannot play on a playground or at a play structure due to inaccessibility or adaptability? Imagine a child in a wheelchair or walker having to sit out on the side instead of playing with their peers. I have first hand had to witness my daughter, who has not been able to play at a playgrounds to to inaccessibility. I have lifted her up onto structures, carried her up and down stairs, and even sat her across my lab so she could swing.

Every child deserves the equal opportunity to learn grow and play. At MEC Disabilities we strive to motivate, elevate, and celebrate disabilities and we would do anything to help make a change and see children of all abilities play together.

Did you know...?

Schools across America are seeing growing numbers of students with disabilities. According to PEW Research: Nearly 7 million disabled students make up 14% of the national public school enrollment from 2017-2018 according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Which has increased from 11% from 2000-2001. With these growing numbers it should be revised in the ADA Act that all public playgrounds and school playgrounds have at least 20% of the playground structure be ADA Accessible/ have adaptive playground equipment so that students with disabilities (particularly physical) can have an equal opportunity to play and interact with their peers.

Please follow us at mecdisabilities.org for information, updates, and how to help.

MEC Disabilities can help fundraise, get adaptive playground equipment, and equipment for schools so that schools can facilitate a safe play environment for children with disabilities.

MEC Disabilities has already been in contact with Senator Ron Wyden's office in regards to this matter and if we get enough attention on this matter we can make a real difference and help the children of America. Please support us in helping see a change for equality amongst our children. We all have a voice and if we all use it to make a difference we can create an equal environment for children of all abilities. Where no child is left behind.

If we win: Then the impact can be greater than just playground equipment it will also be a huge stride in human rights and equality on the disability spectrum as well as for the children in America present and future.

If we lose: MEC Disabilities will help as many schools as possible with funds we raise.

So, please sign the petition so we can see a positive change at our public playgrounds and schools. Help the children of America with disabilities have a voice.

Thank You!
