Why this petition matters

Started by Josh Green

FreeTV and the Ad Standards Board, You are failing our children. The blatant disregard for the well being of our children by playing gambling ads during televised sporting events is unacceptable and must be stopped immediately!

The Broadcast Industry Code clearly states, that in March 2018, tighter restrictions were apparently placed on gambling advertising:

"The new rules supplement existing rules and introduce restrictions that gambling ads cannot be played during live sporting events broadcast between 5am and 8:30pm, and five minutes before and after the event."

The increase in ads for companies like Neds and Bet 365 during the NRL series as well as other televised events has been tenfold between 2018 and 2019. The fact they say "Gamble Responsibly" at the end is a complete joke and only serves to illustrate how ineffective and outdated the guidelines around gaming advertising have become.

We call upon the Government and Industry Bodies to make swift changes to the guidelines for gaming advertising:

  • To completely ban all advertising of gambling apps and services on television before 8:30pm
  • To review and amend the requirements of gaming services companies to warn the public of the risks involved with gambling
  • To cut the number of ad spots a single gaming advertiser can purchase during a televised sporting event (after 8:30pm) to two.

Thank you for joining the petition to help prevent our children forming gambling habits. It is exactly these sort of underhanded tactics that cause serious damage to our country's well being and should be stopped.
