Action for a Skidmore College Land Acknowledgment and Action Going Forward
Skidmore College resides on land stolen from the Haudenosaunee, Mohawk, and Mohican people, however, Skidmore has failed to even provide an official land acknowledgment statement. We as Kimball RAs and the greater Skidmore community are demanding that an official land acknowledgment be released by the end of Fall 2021's semester. We as a PWI have been residing on this land for over a hundred years; it is well past time to acknowledge who's land we are truly on. Recognizing that land acknowledgment is an ongoing and living process, and only a small, first step towards creating ethical, reparative, and reciprocal relationships with the Native stewards of these lands, the Skidmore Theater Department practiced land acknowledgment throughout 2020, and revised their acknowledgment in 2021, with the recognition that land acknowledgment is an ongoing process that must include indigenous voices. Skidmore College as a whole should commit to a land acknowledgment process, that includes creating sustainable and reciprocal relationships with the Native stewards of the lands Skidmore occupies. We demand that Skidmore not only implement a land acknowledgment, but also create a committed and detailed plan on how reparations will be paid moving forward. It is crucial that Skidmore actively contributes to the constant process of supporting indigenous communities through concrete action, not just performative activism. We also demand that Skidmore examine the institution's interactions with indigenous communities in the past and educate the general public on their historical atrocities in partnership with local Native nations. This action meaningfully supports the process of greater acknowledgment and awareness of Indigenous history. We encourage President Conner to release his own statement and facilitate dialogues during Indigenous Heritage Month (November) surrounding this cause. Please sign below to articulate your support.
