In 2017, more people died as victims of mass shootings than troops in combat zones. 590 died due to mass shootings. 1,852 were wounded. In the first 45 days of 2018, 18 school-related shootings have taken place. On February 14th, 2018, the United States and the world witnessed one of the deadliest and most horrifying mass shootings in history, where an ex-student of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School returned to his old school in Parkland, Florida, to ruthlessly take the lives of 17 innocent people and injuring at least 14 others. This heartless crime has severely hurt, when not traumatized, thousands of students, parents, and citizens, to the detriment of their lives and the security of our country's families and children. It was neither the first nor the last of its kind. It is a reflection of a scary and growing trend in American society: mass shootings have become more frequent and deadlier, but our government has not accomplished its job of protecting our people. It is inadmissible that children of all ages should fear attending school, a place where students should feel safe and nurtured, cared for and loved. Legislation must be passed, security must be increased, and people must come together to stop these horrifying events from happening. We must come together. We must stand up and fight for the lives of our people. We must speak out against inaction. Therefore, in order to raise awareness and bring change to a stagnant state of inaction within a growing problem, to honor the lost lives and ensure that our voices will be heard,
I ask that students of Broward County schools DO NOT ATTEND SCHOOL on Friday, February 23rd, 2018.
This will bring attention and recognition to an extremely important issue: our children's safety. It is trivial that our country and its people understand the severity of this situation. If we cannot come together and protest for what we value and for the safety of our people, congregate to come up with solutions to our security problems, and unite as individuals for the lost lives this country has seen and is yet to see, mass shootings will continue to happen and we will be doomed by our own inaction.
