Our children are learning in new, and often challenging, environments. One group of students that has special challenges is language learners.  These are students who have moved here from a country where they did not learn English or grew up speaking a language other than English. These students must learn academic content and English simultaneously.  Those who are Newcomers, in the US for less than 2 years, often are refugees or have limited educational experience. They may also lack computer skills, making virtual learning even more challenging

Everyone is under greater stress at this time.  Teachers are working longer hours as we get used to teaching online.  Students do their best to complete assignments, whether it be via Zoom or on their own.  Despite all the hard work, it takes longer to get things done in this format. A lesson that could be done in one in-person class period now takes 2 virtual ones. Students are learning, but not at the same rate as before.

Now, in addition to all the other stressors, we are asking our students to take a standardized test, the ACCESS for ELLs.  Students want to do well, and they know when they don't.  Giving this assessment, under these circumstances, will only cause more frustration for our students.  Not only that, but we are asked to do this in-person, at a time when COVID cases are surging. Please suspend these tests for this school year.
